Search Engine Optimization (SEO) process

Optimization (SEO) process

Before you begin a search engine optimization project, you should have a clear understanding of what is involved in an effective SEO campaign. To this end, here is a simple breakdown of the entire SEO process.

Keyword research:

Keyword research involves identifying a bunch of essential keyword phrases which will be used in optimization. This step is vital and requires time concentration. Successful keyword research frequently leads to the identification of a good set of phrases which offer a balanced combination of two dynamic factors, i.e., high usage by interested parties and relatively low competition within the existing search engines.

On-Site optimization:

After identifying the right keyword phrases, proceed and implement the phrases naturally into on-site content and within the Meta information which include the H tags, image tags, content title and description.  Just like the first step, this step requires time and a lot of concentration. Needless to say, even though the description tag you use might not carry any weight within the different search engines, they will still appear on SERP (search engine results pages).

Link building:

This is where many people get impatient. You probably have heard many people insisting on getting as many links as possible. The truth is that link relevance and quality is more critical when it comes to search engine trust as opposed to link quantity. Different search engines prefer seeing links grow naturally over a period. Thus, if you go from 200 inbound links to 2,000 inbound links within a short period, something is up. A practical approach like that can result in unnatural link penalties from the concerned search engines. Thus, rather than risking everything, slow down and steadily grow your links in the recommended way.

Follow-up reporting and analysis:

Follow-up and reporting should be done on a regular basis. The process should focus on page rankings, social signals, site traffic levels and many other vital metrics which can easily give measurable results of the search engine optimization campaign. The parameters to be used should be in line with the specific goals of the particular site being optimized.

Important notes:

A successful search engine optimization campaign takes time. Typically, the lag time between work and seeing results takes four to six months. Thus, clients need to exercise patience and at the same time have realistic expectations. As a service provider, you should make this clear before embarking on the process.
